Black tried a sideline with a dubious reputation and obtained an even ending. However, some imprecise play lead to an inferior position and now black has a clearly inferior position.
Critical Position
White has the better pawn structure and better minor piece but what to do with these advantages. How should white continue. There are no tactics now. This is the time to show an understanding of general endgame methods and procedures. What do you propose?
- Create a second front on the queenside awith a4
- Trade off all rooks with Rd1 and win the good N vs bad bishop ending
- Trade off one pair of rooks to reduce black’s counterplay potential
- Use the knight to press the kingside with Ng3-h5 or f5
- Secure the knight with f3
- Something else perhaps?
