Black tried a sideline with a dubious reputation and obtained an even ending. However, some imprecise play lead to an inferior position and now black has a clearly inferior position.

Critical Position
White has the better pawn structure and better minor piece but what to do with these advantages. How should white continue. There are no tactics now. This is the time to show an understanding of general endgame methods and procedures. What do you propose?

  1. Create a second front on the queenside awith a4
  2. Trade off all rooks with Rd1 and win the good N vs bad bishop ending
  3. Trade off one pair of rooks to reduce black’s counterplay potential
  4. Use the knight to press the kingside with Ng3-h5 or f5
  5. Secure the knight with f3
  6. Something else perhaps?

Black gave up the a-pawn and is going for a kingside attack to justify the sacrifice. The are open files around white’s king for black to develop the attack with but as direct breakthough is not evident. Now white must find the most effective way to protect the king. What do you recommend for white?
