There probably will not be much chess news to report after this as Europe has basically shut down discretionary travel to Corona virus concerns. I will be very surprised if there are any incoming international players for the coming RigoChess and First Saturday monthly tournaments. If you are thinking of travelling-please check carefully if the tournaments are still going to be held.

Budapest Spring Festival 2020 Cancelled

I was notified by email:

Dear Chess Friends!

Dear Chessplayers!

On March 11, 2020, the Hungarian government declared a health emergency throughout Hungary. As part of the extraordinary measures, all indoor sporting events where the combined number of competitors and other participants will reach 100 people will be banned from March 12, 2020!

Unfortunately, the measure also affects the Budapest Spring Festival International Chess Tournament, which was planned to take place in Budapest from April 21 to April 29, 2020. According to an extraordinary announcement made by the President of the Hungarian Chess Federation on March 11, 2020, chess competitions and other chess events organized by the Hungarian Chess Federation and its member organizations (such as the Budapest Chess Federation organizing the Budapest Spring Festival) must be suspended until April 30, 2020.

Due to the force majeure situation, the Board of the Budapest Chess Federation is forced to cancel the Budapest Spring Festival International Chess Tournament The Budapest Chess Federation – if the epidemic situation allows it – is planning to create a major international chess competition in the second half of August, and we are looking forward to welcoming all chess players and all those interested! Well this seems like a common sense decision in light of what is happening around the world
