2012 Ottawa Winter Open RA Centre (3), 17.11.2012
Black has taken some risks in the opening to generate winning chances but now the queenside flank action is beginning to take shape. How should white respond? This is more a question of strategic understanding than tactics.

Amator Cup Rd2 2012-11
This was my rescheduled Rd2 game which I won. Now I have 2.5/3. The game was played at 11am but came after yesterday’s 70-move marathon so I was not feeling so energetic.

Amator Cup (2), 18.11.2012
The queenless game came early for black but now deep into the maneuvering phase black needs to make progress to exploit the better structure. What do you suggest?
- Take the a-file
- Advance on the kingside with …f6 and g5 say to aim for …g4 later
- Activate the king with …Kf6 with the …Ke5 plan
- Something else? Is there a hidden tactic perhaps?

Black gave up the bishop pair early and white swooped in on the queenside and won the a-pawn. After was a farily uneventful conversion.

Amator Cup Rd3 2012-11-17
My game was the last to finish again so I have only a minimal idea of what happened in the tournament. I’ll do up a more detailed post soon. Tomorrow I have my rescheduled Rd2 game for 11.am while everyone else has an off day.
I won my first game, but managed to miss many things.

Black has just played 16..Nxh6. The attack still rages, I was having trouble finding a way to end the game.

WYCC 2012(CAN) People Behind the Scenes
Let’s not forget the Canadian Delegation working hard behind the scenes.
Pics and detailed captions from FB TeamCanadaAtWYCC2012
Victoria Doknjas, Team Canada 2012 Lead Photographer and Journalist. This is Victoria’s (John, Joshua and Neil’s Mom) third time as a Team Canada Photographer. She created and manages the “Team Canada at WYCC 2012” Facebook page, which included interviews with IM Richard Wang, FM Jason Cao, Qiyu Zhou, and GM Eric Hansen. Victoria also designed this year’s logo for the Team Canada’s polo shirts. Victoria has been sharing photo duties with Zhixiang Wang and George Zhou, and has been covering both tournament halls, including other areas of general interest.
Andrew Giblon, Team Canada 2012 Head of Delegation. Andrew (Melissa and Rebecca’s Dad) is an experience HoD (with multiple years serving as either HoD or assistant Hod). Andrew helped coordinate the Team prior to leaving for Maribor, Slovenia, as well as keeping the Team up to date and resolving issues on site. This is often a thankless job with literally countless tasks and problems to resolve. So, we are fortunate to have such a capable and experienced person like Andrew on our Team helping.
Victor Itkin, Team Canada 2012 Assistant Head of Delegation. Victor (David’s Dad) has been compiling stats and info about the Team during each round as part of the Team updates; and providing general support such as, stepping up to pick up and distribute the Team IDs and because there was 400+ Euros outstanding before the Team IDs would be released – Victor paid the amount in order for the Team to get their IDs on a timely basis.
Andrew Peredun, Team Canada 2012 Coach. Andrew P. is an accomplished chess coach and high rated player. He has previous coaching experience with Team Canada and the kids have benefitted from his game analysis and prep.
Edward Porper, Team Canada 2012 Coach. Edward was on this year Canadian Olympic Team and is one of the highest rated players in Canada. This is Edward’s first tour of duty as a Team Canada Coach. The kids have benefitted from his game analysis and prep.
Zhixiang Wang, Team Canada 2012 Photographer. This is Zhixiang’s (Richard’s Dad) second time as a Team Canada Photographer. Zhixiang has an excellent eye for details and that is apparent in the photos that he has taken of the U10 Open, U12 Open/Girls, U14 Open/Girls, U16 Open/Girls, and U18 Open/Girls. He has been excellent to work with on the Team Canada Photo Team.
George Zhou, Team Canada 2012 Photographer. This is George’s (Lily’s Dad) second time as a Team Canada Photographer. George has captured excellent shots of the U8 Open/U8 Girls, and U10 Girls sections; and has been great to work with on the Team Canada Photo Team.
