ChessBase Report
‘For the first time since 2010 the Capablanca Memorial Elite group did not include GM Vassily Ivanchuk among its participants. In his six trips to Havana, the Ukrainian has only lost two games and only once was his ultimate triumph in danger.

His unfortunate absence led to a variety of predictions and more than a few hoped GM Leinier Dominguez would win his third title in this event. As it was, the best chess player in Latin America, with 2723 Elo, finished in third place.

GM Almasi

In the Elite there were several unexpected results. In his first trip to Havana, the Hungarian Zoltan Almasi (2689) left a very good impression, and dominated the group with 6.5/10, thanks to four wins, five draws and a lone setback.

The veteran player, aged 37, added fifteen Elo points and will now return to the ever expanding list of players rated over 2700. (more)’

Torokves Open 2013-04 Rd8

Rd8
I lost in rather tragic fashion after getting a good position quite early in the game. Both players made made mistakes but in the end I made more and it cost me the game.

Losing is bad enough but it’s part of the game. Today I took a closer look and was quite surprised to see clearly the large number and variety of mistakes I made.

Here is the game.

Torokves 2013-04 Final Standings

This time for Torokves I played in the Open whereas before I usually played in the RR. The atmosphere was more casual but I played like a lame duck, making mistake after mistake in many games until I lost in round 8 to bring me down to earth.

I took a couple of zero point byes to play in another 6-round open sponsored by club, RAC and managed to win on tiebreaks but this tournament was a competitive failure.

I’ll have to take a day or two to check over the round 8 game but in the mean time May will be an off month for some serious repair work.

Group A
Palla won with a fantastic 8/9 and confirmed his arrival as an up and coming young star.

TCh-HUN 2012–13 Rd9-GM Papp G(HUN) and GM Ilincic,Z(SRB)

TWIC 964

Sicilian Najdorf 6.Be2 h5!?(Diagram)

GM Ilincic won a titanic defensive struggle with his pet line 6…h5!? The ..h5 restraining idea is now popular against the English Attack(6.Be3/f3 and g4) but here seems odd and out of place.

6…h5 flies under the radar and is unique to Ilincic.

Here is some background from Youtube on Ilincic.

Capablanca Memorial 2013-GM Almasi,Z(HUN) Clear First

More on Capablanca

More on Cuban Life

(more)’

Open
Varga got back on the winning track. I lost my heartbreaking game in tragic fashion. Game and analysis coming soon.

My Sicilian Najdorf was met by the main line 6.Bg5 to which I challenged with the Poisoned Pawn variation. Soon I had a clear advantage with a P+ and the bishop pair. Then in the second phase of the game I fell apart and gave back a pawn and then another as I made mistake after mistake until I finally lost.
