Budapest TCh 2012-13 Rd9-Szepes,Tamas(HUN)

Budapest TCh 2012-13 Rd9 Board 2
My RAC teammate Szepes,Tamas also faced a Benko Gambit but played a much nicer game than me and won in style.

Szepes,Tamas (2228) – Lisznyai,Sandor (2192)
Benko Gambit[A58]
BUD tch Lilienthal 12/13 (9.2), 10.03.2013

Position 1
Black has released white’s a,b pawns in return for having a strong Nd3 in the heart of white’s position. What do you suggest for white?

White to Play

19…Bc8

Position 2
The game has gone well for white as the b-pawn has made a winning charge down the queenside. It only remains to find a suitable finishing plan. What do you suggest for white?(More than one solution-find the most convincing move)

White to Play

28…Rf7

I forgot my scoresheet at the tournament site so the game was reconstructed. Hopefully I got the moves right. My opponent had a hard to spell name which I don’t remember.

RAC I lost the match 7.5-4.5

  • Board 1 IM Halasz,T won(black with RRB which overcame QB)
  • Board 2 Szepes,T won(white against a Benko. Szepes was down an exchange for 2 strong queenside passed pawns won nicely as black had  a weak king)
  • Board 3 Lost (Suranyi,P lost to Borda,L. Suranyi fell behind in development and then exposed his pieces)
  • Board 4 (me)
The Team Captain brought his camera but there was only enough charge to take a couple of pictures.

Here’s the game.(Better analysis coming soon)

Yip,Michael (2087) – Szentmihalyi,Tamas (2051)
Benko Gambit 8.g3[A58]
BUD tch Lilienthal 12/13 (9.4), 10.03.2013

I stumbled into a won position with some non-special play and then noticed the winning move quickly. Then, I looked for an even better one.

Sadly my improved ‘win’ had an obvious hole in the idea and after, I struggled to make a draw.

Position 1
The critical position arises after black took the b-pawn with 29…Qxb5. The queen is now unprotected if only Bb4 could find a way to move to make a discovered attack.

White to Play

29…Qxb5

TCh-BEL 2012-13 Rd10-GM Hera,I(HUN)

TWIC 956

GM Hera unleashed the power of parallel hanging pawns after an ordinary buildup in a quiet Reti opening.

Hera,I (2570) – Illner,A (2459)
Reti[A14]

TCh-BEL 2012–13 Belgium BEL (10.5), 03.03.2013

Position 1
White has parallel hanging pawns and is possibly ready to strike. What do you recommend for white?

  • 23.d5(unleashing Bb2 and banking everything on the energy of the d-pawn, as played in the game)
  • 23.c5(pressing the queenside and the queen)
  • 23.Bb3(keeping the tension and all options open)
  • Somthing else

Position 2
White has an isolated pawn but what is the correct followup?

2 games from TWIC 956 for 1.d4 players.

Game 1 Dutch Stonewall
The Nh3+Bf4 method is a nice way to deal with the solid Stonewall. Black went a bit far on the kingside in an ambitious attempt to create kingside chances and was severely dealt with.

Game 2 Benko Gambit g3
The Benko Gambit is a popular defence which requires concrete handling. The 8.g3 Bg7 9.Bg2 line is one such method and now 9…Nfd7!? is popular. White achieved nothing special in the feature game but got chances when black tried too hard and went astray in complex play.

TCh-SVK 2012-13 Rd11-GM Varga,Z(HUN)

TWIC 956

GM Zoltan Varga was in good form as he unleashed a pet line against the Caro-Kann. The result was an unbalanced equality and a nice massage on c5 and the dark squares.

Varga,Zo (2455) – Molnar,P SVK (2367)
Caro-Kann Quasi-Panov 5.Qa4+[B10]
TCh-SVK Extraliga 2012–13 Slovakia SVK (11.5), 03.03.2013

Position 1
White switched from a bind to a kingside attack which induced black to lash out with 35..f5. What do you suggest for white now?

Two games from TWIC 956 are presented.

  • Game 1 shows how harmful poor preparation can be for black.
  • Game 2 shows a nice attack in the 7.Qa4+ exchange variation after some enterprising play from white and some cooperative defence from black.

Game 1
Black made an odd opening choice as Avrukh already analyzed to move 23 as clear advantage for white in 1.d4 Vol2(Quality Chess 2009). No improvement was shown and white put an a nice endgame display to claim the win.

This game serves as a warning for unprepared Grunfeld players.

Grunfeld g3 10.Re1 e5[D76]
29th Open Cappelle la Grande FRA (3.22), 25.02.2013

White to Play

27…Qf8
Game 2
The search for weapons to use against the Grunfeld continues. The disruptive check 7.Qa4+ produced a complex game after 7…Qd7 but the result of the game was not related to the opening.

Vishnu,P (2483) – Adhiban,Baskaran (2547)

This is the kind of routine GM vs non-GM win that will pass unnoticed, but has a mysterious effortless air to it. There are two major things to notice about this game.

(1)Black’s formation against the London System is effective. The ..Nd7/Ne7!? development allow black to hunt Bf4 with a quick …e5 and ..Nf5
(2)The endgame method used to exploit the bishop pair and compromised pawn structure.

Scipioni,G (2041) – Horvath,Cs (2514)
London System vs Averbakh[A40]
2nd Adriatico Open A Montesilvano ITA (1.1), 01.03.2013

Position 1

Black has many imbalances to work with in the ending.

  • The strong Bd4
  • The bishop pair
  • Active rooks
  • Better structure

What do you suggest for black now?
