Chess in Public Parks(New Orleans)

Chess in Public Parks Story and Photo from NOLA.com Bonnabel_high_school_alumnus

‘…Chess Communité, an organization recently founded by Mauricio Sierra, a New Orleans native and former Kenner resident, and Shelly Florman, a Bywater resident, plans to donate custom-built chess tables to several parks in the New Orleans area and possibly surrounding areas such as Jefferson Parish.

Photo-Mauricio Sierra visits Alcee Fortier park to point out some of the few public chess tables that exist in New Orleans.

Sierra, a Loyola law school senior and Bonnabel High alumnus, decided to create the organization after traveling to New York and seeing the diversity that public chess tables can create, he said.
“We hope to create a space that will give people a way to engage in a peaceful, non-violent manner,” Sierra said. “Chess is a game that transcends culture. It doesn’t matter what nationality, creed or color you are.”

Chess Communité seeks to raise $10,000 to hire local artists that can design and build the chess tables which will remain as permanent fixtures in the parks.(more)’

Perenyi Memorial 2013-01 Rd9

(Now 7:30am)
Today’s game is 9:00am.

I’ll have more material up later in the day. I lost a long hard game yesterday from a Philidor with black against Szoke,G(1922) and now have 4/8.

My position was favorable but I chose the wrong moment for active play and the game turned in a queenless middlegame.

(4:30pm)
My opponent was a no-show so I won by forfeit. I’ll post the results when they are available from Chess.hu verseny

Computer Chess-Movie from Sundance Festival

Here is a coming chess movie on computer chess.

Synopsis (via Sundance):
“Is there a computer program in the house which can stand up against a human chess master?” That’s the question posed by mastermind of the game Pat Henderson, head of an annual computer chess tournament. Set in 1980 in a nondescript hotel, Computer Chess follows several young geniuses as they try to make the ultimate chess program to beat a human player. As the nerdy guys sweat through various social situations (especially with the one girl there), and the convention overlaps with a group of new-age couples in therapy, things get really strange.(more)’

4NCL 2012–13 Staverton ENG (4.122), 13.01.2013

Position 1
The position has a strong hedgehog flavor with white’s e4/c4 pawns cramping black’s position. How should black play?

  • 20…d5
  • Something else

Black to Play

Position 2
Black has sacrifice the exchange for dark square counterplay. White’s kingside has been broken up but now what should black do?
