Budapest TCh 2012-13 Rd9-IM Halasz,Tamas(HUN)

Budapest TCh 2012-13 Rd9 Board 1
IM Halasz,Tamas won a tough RR vs Q battle as the RAC top two boards came through with key wins. Unfortunately RAC I lost the match to Spartcus II 7.5-4.5.

Metaxasz,Vaszilisz (2151) – Halasz,Tamas (2364)
QGD Exchange[D35]

BUD tch Lilienthal 12/13 (9.1), 10.03.2013

Position 1
An interesting Q vs, RR battle is taking place. What do you suggest for white?

White to Play

28..Kb8

Position 2
The lineup of the king and queen is a big tactical hint. What do you recommend for black?

Black to Play

26.Qe1

Budapest TCh 2012-13 Rd9-Szepes,Tamas(HUN)

Budapest TCh 2012-13 Rd9 Board 2
My RAC teammate Szepes,Tamas also faced a Benko Gambit but played a much nicer game than me and won in style.

Szepes,Tamas (2228) – Lisznyai,Sandor (2192)
Benko Gambit[A58]
BUD tch Lilienthal 12/13 (9.2), 10.03.2013

Position 1
Black has released white’s a,b pawns in return for having a strong Nd3 in the heart of white’s position. What do you suggest for white?

White to Play

19…Bc8

Position 2
The game has gone well for white as the b-pawn has made a winning charge down the queenside. It only remains to find a suitable finishing plan. What do you suggest for white?(More than one solution-find the most convincing move)

White to Play

28…Rf7

I forgot my scoresheet at the tournament site so the game was reconstructed. Hopefully I got the moves right. My opponent had a hard to spell name which I don’t remember.

RAC I lost the match 7.5-4.5

  • Board 1 IM Halasz,T won(black with RRB which overcame QB)
  • Board 2 Szepes,T won(white against a Benko. Szepes was down an exchange for 2 strong queenside passed pawns won nicely as black had  a weak king)
  • Board 3 Lost (Suranyi,P lost to Borda,L. Suranyi fell behind in development and then exposed his pieces)
  • Board 4 (me)
The Team Captain brought his camera but there was only enough charge to take a couple of pictures.

Here’s the game.(Better analysis coming soon)

Yip,Michael (2087) – Szentmihalyi,Tamas (2051)
Benko Gambit 8.g3[A58]
BUD tch Lilienthal 12/13 (9.4), 10.03.2013

I stumbled into a won position with some non-special play and then noticed the winning move quickly. Then, I looked for an even better one.

Sadly my improved ‘win’ had an obvious hole in the idea and after, I struggled to make a draw.

Position 1
The critical position arises after black took the b-pawn with 29…Qxb5. The queen is now unprotected if only Bb4 could find a way to move to make a discovered attack.

White to Play

29…Qxb5

BTCh Div IV Rd5(Monday League)

These league games are not rated but are fiercely contested nevertheless. Usually the games are not input into any database and are lost forever but many interesting games are played.

RAC 2.5-VSG 3.5

My team lost narrowly and I contributed a quick loss to the match. The board one game was much closer and had some interesting points in the endgame reached.

Bednay,D (2255) – Nadasi,B (2161)
Sicilian 5.f3 e5[B55]
BTCh Div IV (5.1), 21.01.2013

Position 1
There is no doubt that white has the better structure and the better chances. White should white play now?

Budapest TCh 2012-13 Div IV Rd7-Yip

RAC 5-SZATKI 1
This was played in an unrated league with 6 boards but as is usual in Hungary every match/game is taken very seriously whether rated or not.

I managed to escape with a draw after spoiling a winning position after playing a rather horrible game.

Lakatos,A – Yip,M (2019)
Sicilian Grand Prix[B23]
BTCh Div IV (7.3), 26.02.2013

Position 1
White has just challenged the strong central knight with 15.Ne2 but clearly black has the better placed pieces considering the out of play Ba4 and passive Rb1. What do  you suggest for black?

Black to Play

15.Ne2

Budapest TCh 2012-13 Div I Rd7-Kozak,A(HUN)

Kozak kept pushing a roughly equal position until the passed h-pawn decided in QR-QR play.

Dutch 2.Bg5 g6[A80]
Bp Csb 2012/13 I Lilienthal Budapest (7.5), 03.02.2013

Position 1
Both sides have passed pawns but the h-pawn is further advanced and has ideal rook support from behind. What should white do now?

White to Play

The Adventure

Arriving at the side was an adventure in itself as the REAC club is near Budai, Laszlo Stadium on the outskirts of Northwest Budapest in district XV.

I was fortunate to run into a player who safely guided my to the playing hall and on the way was treated to a background story of two of Hungary’s notable soccer players.

Budai was a teammate of Puskas who also has a stadium named after him.

‘Ferenc Puskás(born Ferenc Purczeld; 1 April 1927[3] – 17 November 2006) was a Hungarian footballer and manager, widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time. He scored 84 goals in 85 international matches for Hungary,[4] and 514 goals in 529 matches in the Hungarian and Spanish leagues…In 2002, the Népstadion in Budapest was renamed the Puskás Ferenc Stadion in his honor.[10]

He was also declared the best Hungarian player of the last 50 years by the Hungarian Football Federation in the UEFA Jubilee Awards in November 2003.[11] In October 2009, FIFA announced the introduction of the FIFA Puskás Award, awarded to the player who has scored the “most beautiful goal” over the past year.

He was also listed in Pelé’s FIFA 100′-Wikipedia Ferenc_Puskas

Budapest TCh 2012-13 Monday League Rd6 Feb 4 2013

I drew my game and was lucky not to lose as my opponent showed me too much respect.

RAC played UKSE in a 6 board team match(unrated).

One of our players did not show up. When I left, RAC had 2 wins and 2 draws with our board 1 still playing trying to grind out a g3 Queen’s Indian with a space advantage.

I played rather horribly and on the walk back to the metro with my teammates I walked right into a low-hanging street sign and gave my head a good bashing which caused a good burst of laughter. Such was my evening.

The only good thing (apart from not losing) about the day was that before the round I found a little used book shop and bought two cheap Hungarian chess books.

Here’s the game.

Position 1
White is fully committed to a kingside attack having just sacrificed the a-pawn  after 26…Qxa4. How should white continue the attack?
