The 5.Qc2 has exploded in popularity in recent years and remains a hot topic. After reaching the position after 14…Nd8(diagram), GM Kozul played the thematic square clearing pawn sacrifice 15.e6!? at the Karpos Open and won a tense game.

Hungarian junior Peczely,S faced the solid Caro-Kann in rd2 and was slowly outplayed with an uncommon line in the 4..Bf5 variation. Black played the under the radar 12…a5!?(diagram) and played to massage down the queenside.

White fought back to an equal position only to blunder but the real value of the game is unearthing the 12…a5!? continuation.
