From Art to Chess Aussie Style: Kendenup-WA

In Canada it’s chess and math but in Western Australia it’s chess and …art! A papier-mache arts project started students at Kendenup Primary School onto the road of chess.

‘Six students from Kendenup Primary School made a triumphant return to Albany this week after coming runners-up in a major national chess tournament. The talented group spent two days competing against 15 other primary school teams in the National Chess Kids Tornelo Tournament held in Melbourne this week.

As well as convincingly taking second place in the competition, which is the biggest of its kind in the country, the Kendenup students achieved the best ever result by a Western Australian school. Their achievement was all the more remarkable as it was only their second year to take part in the event, after coming in eighth place last year.

Principal Fiona Hall said the entire school community was thrilled with the achievements of the chess team. She also paid tribute to chess coach Heather Fergie and mentor Bill Sandilands for their ongoing commitment to the team…’

Art to Chess
‘A papier-mache arts project sparked a strategic chess move that has taken young students from a small Great Southern community to a national championships….The love of chess was sparked last year when Kendenup primary students made chess pieces from soft drink bottles and papier-mache for an art project.

Deputy principal and visual arts teacher – and now chess coach – Heather Fergie then taught them the game.’

‘STUDENTS at Kendenup Primary School have gone from being chess novices to State champions in less than a year.

“With the help of local chess player Bill Sandilands and teacher Raelene Palfrey and myself – who students took great delight in beating when they could – they were able to practice new moves,” she said.

“With interest in chess increasing principal Fiona Hall applied for and received a grant from Bendigo Bank, Mt Barker branch to purchase a large outdoor chess set which is now used in the playground by students.”

Students Jayden Williams, Joel Gray, Alex Bolton, Isaak Bateman, James Gray, Caitlin Hillman, Tom Hillman and Matthew Hillman first won the local competition in September which was held in Gnowangerup and earned them a spot in the State finals.

State-winning students who travelled to Perth to compete were Joel Gray, Jayden Williams, James Gray, Alex Bolton, Dale Osborne and Izaak Bateman. James Gray was runner up individual student in the primary division, Jayden Williams placed third and Alex Bolton and Joel Gray were equal fourth.

“Needless to say there were many phone calls to the waiting and supportive teachers and students back at school and much interest in this new ‘chess school’ from all involved in the tournament organisation in Perth,” Heather said.

“Following the team’s remarkable victory in the State championships Bendigo Bank once again has been amazing with the donation of $3000 towards the cost of students and adults for the Melbourne trip.”

A further $3000 was raised and the team will now head to Melbourne to compete in the nationals’

GM Master Class:Andersson,Ulf

Here is an instructive game from GM Andersson who wins a game that would otherwise go unnoticed as his opponent has no fancy title and posesses a modest club player’s rating. Yet there are many little things to be learned.

How does a GM win games he is supposed to?
What are the typical mistakes of the normal amateur?

Let us see the game.

Black played the rare 8..dc giving up the d5 central point. This was met by solid practical play and the result was a roughly equal position.

Position 1
White has a well placed central Ne5/Ne4 knight pair while black has the passive bishop pair. What do you recommend for black?
-21…f6 kicking away at least one of those knight to start with. Then the passive Be8 can emerge on f7-g6 or h5 even
-21…a5 restraining the queenside
-Something else

Black to Play

21.Rac1

Position 2
The knight pair has shuffled over from e5-e4 to c5-c4. What is next for white?
-24.h4 and if allowed h5 to clamp the kingside light squares
-24.b4 gaining space on the queenside
-Somthing else.

White to Play

23…Bf7

Position 3
White has long range bishop to play against black knight. But the intended d-file invasion does not look possible and the c5 pawn clamp is being undermined. What should white do?

Critical Position 1
There is an attack in the air on the kingisde where black has just played 17…hg. What do you recommend for white?
-White needs more pieces 18.Ba3 chases off the defending rook
-Bc1 should be on the long diagonal to oppose Bf6 so 18.Bb2 followed by Rad1 and prepare c4-d5. This will also restrain Bb7
-Re1 can do more so 18.Re3-h3 to use the h-file is called for
-Ng5 has lost its usefulness. 18.Ne4 recentralizing and allowing Bh6! to exploit the kingside light squares is better
-Slow builiding with 18.Bd2 and then  Re3 and Rae1 is the way to go. Then white will be ready with sacrificing on e6 or g6 to kill black’s king position
-Something else
White to Play

Laura Davidson

‘I go to Coworth Flexlands School in Surrey. I started playing chess just over a year ago. Mrs Kate Hegarty taught me how to play chess at school. My first tournament was the Megafinals in April 2011. Since then I have played in many tournaments across the country, and won lots of trophies and medals. I play for the Wey Valley chess team and at the Sandhurst chess club. I also play violin, sing, swim in the school team, ice skate and play tennis.
I would like to thank Mrs Sweeney, Mrs Hegarty, Sarah Hegarty, Nicholas Pert, Mike Basman, Mrs Pat Armstrong, Jonathan Tuck and Alec Aslett. I have met some great people playing chess and thank you all for giving me the opportunity to play the game.’

Nimzo-Indian 8…Nbd7 9.Bd2[E55]
FIDE GP Tashkent Tashkent UZB (8.4), 30.11.2012
White played the harmless 9.Bd2 and got nothing in the opening.

Position 1
Now later, black has just recaptured with 22…Nxd5 and an endgame has begun. How do you assess the position?
-Dead even. The IQP is not a factor due the white’s active pieces
-Slightly better for black due to the IQP
-Unclear, it’s too soon to tell as the Nc6 gives white a chance to make murky play.

22…Nxd5

Position 2
26.a3 has just been played. The RRB-RRN ending looks complex but really it is not. Black has the better structure and more  useful minor piece. How should black proceed?
-26..Rxa6
-Build slowly with …f6/..e5
-Play the little hidden tactical blow
-Somthing else

Black to Play

26.a3

Endgame Master Class-GM Andersson

Here is an ordinary endgame from GM Ulf Andersson who grinds out a long ending from a slightly better position. Yet the game was not entirely one-sided as both sides did not follow the optimal path.

The endgame phase can be examined under the following themes

  • Greater piece activity
  • Symmetrical pawn structure
  • RN-RN;R-R
  • Open file occupation
  • 2nd rank occupation

Wiley,To (2296) – Andersson,U (2582) [E39]
38th OKU 2011 Utrecht NED (3.2), 04.06.2011

Position 1
After 27.Nf3 black has the more active pieces. What do you recommend black now?

Black to Play

Position 2
After 31…Rc2 black is pressing with at least a slight advantage. How should white defend?

White to Play

Position 3
The R-R is sharp and requires some precision. How should black continue?

Black to Play
