WIM Smaranda Padurariu gives the new players their first taste of the game

‘The Royal Dutch Chess Association organizes so-called chess challenges at secondary schools throughout The Netherlands. The challenge is that you can learn how to play chess in one lesson of 45 minutes. The lessons are taught by experienced chess trainers like Dolf Meijer, Arlette van Weersel, Pascal Losekoot and Franck Steenbekkers.

After this lesson they play a tournament in which they are allowed to use a cheatsheet. On the cheatsheet they can find information about how the pieces move. They also get a chance to play a small tournament on Playchess during the Chess Challenge….(more)’

‘Behind me are the Teotihuacan pyramids…’-Hambleton
Photo from his website report

‘The UNAM Chess Festival was a big event, with 5 different sections as well as a super GM tournament featuring the man himself – Magnus Carlsen. In the months leading up to the tournament I casually stated that Carlsen and I were following similar chess schedules.

The festival took place on campus, and the layout of the room was such that tourists, onlookers, and students going about daily activities could stop by a massive white tent to watch the games. It was similar to an indoor tennis bubble, except with chess inside and doors on either side.

The top 12 boards were DGT broadcasted online, with very nice wooden pieces and a separate stage to distinguish yourself. I have never been to any tournament in my life where chess was such a respected public activity that ordinary people took an interest in….’-

Shogi-How to Play

Shogi is a virtually unknown game. Here is how to play. I tried to grasp the rules but it was very confusing to remember and recognise the pieces.

Yoshiharu Habu, 19e Lifetime Meijin in Shogi

Chess and Shogi – GM Alexander Chernin in Japan- by Jacques-Marie Pineau from Kawagoe, Japan
‘…Japan has its own, very popular, version of chess called shogi. Shogi has officially a 400-year history and is considered a traditional art much like tea ceremony or Ikebana. But Shogi is also very contemporary and popular played by millions of Japanese including a few hundred professional players, the best among whom are regarded as celebrities. Yoshiharu Habu and Toshiyuki Moriuchi are respectively the 19e and 18e Lifetime Meijins

To become a Lifetime Meijin you have to win it five times. Emanuel Lasker, Mikhail Botvinnik, Anatoly Karpov and Garry Kasparov would be Lifetime Meijins of chess. Incidentally Habu and Moriuchi are also among the very best chess players in Japan, performing steadily at IM level…’

Endgame Master Class-GM Andersson

Here is an instructive queenless game that turns into a RN-RB ending from the endgame Maestro-Sweedish GM Ulf Andersson.

Bio
‘Ulf Andersson was born on June 27, 1951 in Vasteras, Sweden. He is a leading Swedish chess player. FIDE awarded him the International Master title in 1970 and the International Grandmaster title in 1972.

At his peak, Andersson reached number four on the FIDE Elo rating list. Tournaments he has won include

  • Belgrade 1977,
  • Buenos Aires 1978,
  • Hastings 1978-79,
  • Phillips & Drew 1980,
  • Phillips & Drew 1982,
  • Turin 1982,
  • Wijk aan Zee 1983,
  • Reggio Emilia 1985,
  • Rome 1985 and 1986.

He drew a six-game match against former world champion Mikhail Tal in 1983, and played top board in the second USSR versus The Rest of The World Match in 1984. He led the Swedish Olympiad Team during the 1970s and 1980s.

Andersson is a very solid positional player. He draws a high percentage of his games against fellow grandmasters. He is renowned as a great player of endgames, especially rook endgames, and is famous for winning seemingly “unwinnable” endgames, often in very long games.’ Supreme-Chess

16th OIBM 2012 Bad Wiessee GER (1.12), 27.10.2012[Yip]

Critical Position 1
Both sides have majorities and will advance them to create a passed pawn which will then(hopefully) go onto promotion. Play will be on both wings as a strategic race is now on. Black has a useful minor piece for this type of play as the bishop can play on both wings simultaneously.

Black also has a temporary advantage in the form of a slight lead in development which takes the form of the active Rc8. How does black execute his plan as quickly and efficiently as possible?

Black to Play

Critcial Position 2
Black has sucessfully infiltrated on the kingside and taken the 2nd rank. Everything is going well for black and the win is in sight. But white has ideas too and has just attack the rook with 38.Ne3. What should black do?

Black to Play

Lenier, Jude A(ENG) is having a strong tournament with 2.5/5 and a TPR of 2248. Apparently watching Dr. Who and not tidying up your room are good for chess playing.
