Hungarian TCH 2012-13

Here is a strong game from GM Berkes against veteran GM Farago,Ivan from the Hungarian TCh. The game features the strong technical endgame play of Berkes an his slow positional building style.

King’s Indian Attack vs Slav Triangle with …Bg4[A07]
TCh-HUN 2012–13 Dunaharaszti HUN (4), 18.11.2012
This is an unspectacular game which on the surface contains nothing really remarkable. The game can be broken down into the following stages.

–12.Nxg6 fg creates a structural imbalance and gains the bishop pair for long-term chances

After 12…fg

-A general advance on the queenside
-The ending with 30..Qxb2? gave white all the chances
-Gaining the a-file,  the 7th rank and maintaining a rook on a7(32.Rba2)

After 32.Rba2

-33.Rxa8 eventually won a pawn and began the technical P+ phase conversion phase

The key endgame plan
-The play only on the kingside stage is of key importance. The key to breaking black’s position is to play 74.e5! to cut off the dark bishop from the g7 pawn and then play on the light square to infiltrate the kingside.

White to Play
Black has just played 73..Bb2

-76…gh? 77.Nxh4 is the straw that breaks black’s position. From here on white has the simple plan of pushing pawns and infiltrating on the light squares on which black is effectively fighting a piece down as the bishop lives in the wrong color universe

After 77.Nxh4

Blog Stats and Things Nov 28-2012

I get ideas for posts from Chesstalk, the main Canadian message/discussion board. Chess games are from TWIC(Mark Crowther’s massive effort). I try to be as quick as humanly possible when an idea suggests itself. The only time delay is when I wait for the weekly TWIC games.

Posts usually have annotated games, pictures and if I’m really lucky there is a related Youtube video. Usually there is at least one daily post, even if I happen to be playing in a tournament. Usually, on non-tournament days I can manage 2-3 blog entries.

Pageviews
Pageviews yesterday           201
Pageviews last month       4,737
Pageviews all time history 6,141

On average there are 125-150 pageviews per day. Anything close to 200 has me very happy. The most I remember for a single day was 283, which happened during the recent WYCC during the closing rounds.

Pageviews/day almost doubled when GM Spraggett did a nice write up for BCN in his blog Spraggett On Chess, so thanks Kevin!

One noticeable conclusion is that the popularity of the individual post is not at all related to the strength of the player or the result of the game. Alexandra Botez destroys the other posts and Ashley Tapp is a distant second.

Blog Tools The startup period caused me some pain as I learned what tools there were and how to do even the most basic tasks. There are still many new blog tools and ideas waiting to be discovered if I only knew where to look. For now, I am happy with the basic things covered on the blog.

During the year there are many 1 game/day tournaments(Opens and RRs) which are not well advertised but also good value and reasonably priced. I make an effort play in as many tournaments as possible while I live in Budapest.

I plan to play both these tournaments and blog about them.

First Saturday also has a monthly series of RR tournaments- See Firstsaturday Pogramme 2012-2013

White played enterprising chess and gambited his e-pawn early for compensation. Eventually black consolidated.

Critical Position
White has just played 34.fg. Things look bleak for white. How should black close out the game?

Critical Position 1
White has a slight lead in development. But what is next? This is a test of understanding and choosing the right plan.

Critical Position 2
The ending is in full swing and it is black who is pressing with a slight advantage. The e5 pawn is under attack so how should black react?
-Guard the pawn with …f6
-Trade knights with …Nxd3
-There is a little hidden tactical shot
-Something else

The opening seemed harmless with the queen coming off early in the game. The game features a fabulous RR-RR;R-R ending showcasing the method of converting an extra pawn.

Critical Position
White has an extra pawn but black has active rooks as compensation. How should white proceed?

White to Play

Now the R-R phase is well underway. The e-pawn is under attack. How should white react?
-A passive rook retreat Rc4. Follow with bringing the king to the kingside to support a kingside pawn advance.
-Re5 and offer a winning pawn ending
-e5 crippling the kingside pawns
-Activate the rook with Ra5
